home school

The girls have done very well in school this year. Raven did great with her Latin. I got her a microscope kit and she's had a great time with that - she loves to "teach" Anna with it! Science is her favorite subject. We continued with Wednesday video day and Thursday art day. Also, several field trips. Anna's reading has greatly improved and she's still a math whiz.

Raven has gotten interested in American Girl. She's been reading Molly, Samantha and Kit books like crazy. If you're not familiar with American Girl, each girl is from a different era of American history. Victorian, Great Depression, Civil War, Colonial, etc. With the Civil War re-enactments we've attended and the wonderful American Village (colonial America - I'll explain more about them later) history has been fun. Oh, and of course the battleship, USS Alabama. The other day we had to run some errands and Raven asked me if her dress looked "World War II era?" That kid is a hoot! Such attention to details! She had gotten the idea for the dress from a Kit book. Kit is the American Girl from 1941, I believe.

Looks like we'll check into finding a different cover for next year. East Lake is great and we've enjoyed it, but it's too far into B'ham and we missed too many meetings this year. With all the growth around Chelsea and as popular as home school is now I'm encouraged that we can find something closer and a better fit for us. I just met a HS mom the other day at the park who told me about a group in Pelham that I want to check out.

I have a course in Classical music that I wanted to use this year, but we had a full schedule and I think was probably a bit advanced for this year anyway. Also, might be doing a Thomas Kincaid art course next year. The girls have both have greatly improved their artistic talents. We did some Donna Dewberry One Stroke this year. And, of course, cooking, baking, sewing, crochet, gardening, music, plays........ {does it ever end? LOL} Last year I did all LifePac. This year we had some LifePac and added some Classical materials. Robert and I agree that Classical is the way to go so I'll have to spend some time this summer planning the material I want to use. The kids love LifePac so I need to balance interest/enjoyment with heavy learning.

I’ve said it before, I never thought I’d home school my kids. But what a treat it’s turned out to be!
